This fast is observed on the full moon day of the month of Karthika. Umaiyammai attained the Lord's seat on Karthikai Poornami after austere fasting.

It is called Umamakeshwara Vratham because it is done on the Kartika Poornami in memory of Ammai and Appan.

On this day, fasting is observed in the morning without food. After visiting Shivalaya on that day, food is offered to Lord Shiva.
