This fast is observed on the fourteenth day after the full moon of the month of Masi, Theipira Chaturthasi. This fast can be observed by all regardless of male or female.

If you perform these fasts in remembrance of Lord Shiva, you will get blessings in this life and the hereafter as well as salvation.

This fast is the first among the fasts performed in remembrance of Lord Shiva. In this fast, on the first day of Shivratri they may have food and on the whole day of Shivratri they do not eat food. They bathe in the morning and perform Shivalaya worship and chant the Namasivaya mantra with devotion throughout the day.

They participate in the four-day Shiva worship held at night. During the worship twelve Thirumas including Devaram and Thiruvasam are sung.

The next morning they take a bath and visit the temple and then complete their fast by having a meal with the worshipers of Shiva.

By following this fast, the sins committed in this birth will be removed and one will get a good life and the salvation of rebirth will be obtained by Lord Shiva.

During this fast, idols of Shiva such as Someskander, Dakshinamurthy, Lingotpavar and Chandrasekhar are worshipped.
